Johns Manville Introduces New Formaldehyde-Free Insulation Products
Homeowners may never see behind their walls, but insulation is still an important choice for any builder. The decision on what product to use just got easier, as SBS introduces two new, smarter choices for insulation. ComfortTherm¨ and EasyFit™ are new, formaldehyde-free fiberglass building insulation products from Johns Manville. They offer the same great performance but are easier to handle and eliminate any concern about formaldehyde emissions during manufacturing or after installation.
Formaldehyde has traditionally been used as part of the binding agent in fiber glass insulation. JM Formaldehyde-free insulation utilizes an innovative new acrylic binder. That means no binder-related formaldehyde emissions during manufacturing and no chance of off-gas formaldehyde inside the home after the product is installed.
ComfortTherm is an encapsulated fiber glass insulation that is wrapped in plastic, which means less itch from glass fibers during installation. ComfortTherm thermal and sound control batts are easier to handle and fast and simple to install. The product is two-times more resistant to moisture than kraft paper facing because it uses a plastic vapor retarder. That means a drier, more thermally effective wall cavity. It can be used for sound control around loud dishwashers, TVs stereos or other places where noise control is a problem. When used as a thermal insulation, ComfortTherm is available in both pre-cut batts and rolls and in a variety of R values. It also can be used under floors (with a reversed vapor barrier). Under Floor Batts have unique triple-reinforced stapling flanges positioned on the underside for easy installation under floors and in tight spaces.
EasyFit comes in perforated pre-cut batts that mean less cutting and faster installation. The product comes with unfaced and with kraft facing, and has perforations that allow each section to be separated by hand. EasyFit is designed to fit framing cavities of any width, which is important when you consider that 35 percent of the spaces in a typical home are nonstandard widths. By using EasyFit, you save time and money since less cutting is needed and you're left with minimal scrap leftovers. The result is a more professional looking, better-performing insulation.
Johns Manville is doing its part to make the world a better place to live. In addition to introducing two new formaldehyde-free products, JM's insulation contains 25 percent recycled glass. When JM products are installed to specifications, less energy is needed to heat and cool the home. For more information on ComfortTherm and EasyFit, contact your local SBS representative.
