International Builders’ Show in Orlando Showcases Latest in Building Products and Services

More than 104,000 housing professionals gathered in Orlando in January for the International Builders’ Show (IBS) to see the latest in products and services in 300 building industry categories. Spenard Builders Supply, along with the other divisions of Lanoga, participated with a booth, mainly showcasing Alaska, but it gave the company plenty of opportunity to network with builders, suppliers and manufacturers from across the country.

Products for active senior living, more trends in moulding, some handy new tools specifically designed for contractors and dozens of innovative flooring choices were just a few of the noteworthy items showcased in the more than 1.5 million square feet of exhibits. Cutting-edge products and services aimed at the residential and light commercial industries were highlighted in more than 1,600 exhibitor booths spanning the length of four football fields. More than 200 educational seminars allowed those attending the show to expand their professional knowledge on every topic imaginable.

New products from Trex decking, Simpson Strong-Tie and a new 25-foot Johnson tape measure that fits onto the belt like a cell phone were some of the new products unveiled at the show, that will soon be hitting the shelves at SBS.

Wall and floor products featured at the show included new exterior wood coatings, water sealants, engineered hardwood flooring and a floor system using engineered joists. Construction materials introduced at the show included an innovative roof saver rolled ridge vent that provides better ventilation at the ridge of the roof, a new type of vent panels, a lightweight roofing tile, alternative integrated insulation systems and several unique styles of decking and railing systems.

The IBS featured dozens of fresh ideas in doors, cabinetry, countertops and windows. Highlights included a new line of carriage house garage doors, glass block windows and shower enclosures, the latest countertop colors, interior doors made from a magnetic material that looks and acts like a chalkboard, as well as never-seen-before interior and exterior door styles and designs.

Some of the building accessories were what Alaskans were still talking about weeks after returning home. From glass towel warmers to air purifiers, ceiling fans, satellite dish mounting systems and gas fireplaces, the IBS attendees came home with plenty of new ideas. An impressive line of backyard, lighted dancing fountains received a lot of attention at the show, and one or two are likely to show up in Alaskan landscapes this summer.

Home automation, computers and electronics continued to take center stage at the show. From software for home design and financing – to stock house plans and cost estimating, builders could find just about any type of gadget or computer program they were looking for in Orlando.

The four-day expo began with Grand Opening Ceremonies and a headliner address from football legend Terry Bradshaw. Other featured speakers included Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn) who discussed tax issues, regulatory reform, tort relief and the need for affordable healthcare legislation.

Also at this year’s IBS, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) unveiled its new Model Green Home Building Guidelines. It’s hoped that these voluntary measures will encourage home builders to include environmentally sensitive products and construction methods, while still placing a priority on housing affordability. The green solutions include everything from lot design and preparation to indoor air quality and homeowner maintenance. For more information on the new guidelines, visit www.nahb.org/gbg.

The 2006 IBS will be held in Orlando again and is scheduled for January 11-14, 2006 at the Orange County Convention Center. For more information, go to http://www.buildersshow.com
