Sky Valley Cabinets introduces VG Fir

With its unique, straight grain pattern, VG (Vertical Grain) Fir is one of the most distinctive-looking woods in North America. Grown in the Pacific Northwest, this beautiful coastal softwood provides designers with a rich visual quality and a clean look. Long used by builders for window casings, doors, mouldings, mantels, flooring and framing lumber, VG Fir has become popular for use in furniture and cabinetry.
Characteristics of VG Fir
VG Fir, known for its excellent dimensional stability, is tight-knotted and close-grained. While large knots are generally held to a minimum, pin knots, dry pitch pockets, vine marks and mineral streaks may be present.
Vertical grain is created when lumber is sawn across the annual growth rings, resulting in a straight pattern and smooth surface. The growth rings reflect the growth rate of the individual tree, so the width and spacing of the grain pattern will be different on each piece of wood.
Known for its rosy tint, VG Fir comes in varying degrees of red, pink or yellow tones. The clear, straight grain pattern, in combination with the slightly rosy tint, gives an eye-catching, uniform appearance.
The Aging Process
Like Cherry, the color of VG Fir will darken and redden over time when exposed to light. The rate at which the color will change is dependent upon of lights, especially sunlight, the wood is exposed to on a daily basis.
When adding or replacing VG Fir cabinets to an existing cabinetry project, the new products finished in the same stain color will be lighter for a period of time. As the product ages, the color tones of the new pieces will blend with the original cabinetry.
