1. When using more than one gallon of paint over one area, mix the paint together in
a 5-gallon container to ensure uniform color.
2. Try to paint when the humidity level is low, and when you can open windows throughout the house to allow for ventilation.
3. Paint should never be poured down the drain or put in the trash. Keep extra paint for touchup work, donate the remains to a church or other organization or dispose of it properly at the local landfill. In Anchorage, up to 5 gallons can be disposed of free of charge at the central transfer station in midtown.
4. Wait at least one week before hanging wallpaper border on a freshly painted wall. Pre-pasted paper will leave streaks on freshly painted walls.
5. When taking a break for an hour or two, don’t rinse brushes. Just wrap them in plastic wrap, secure them with a rubber band and place in a cool spot.
6. Before using new roller covers, remove excess lint by running a lint brush or masking tape over the cover.
7. Most roller cover and brush manufacturers list recommended surfaces on the package. Check to make sure you’re buying the right painting tool for each project.
