Color Trends and Choosing the Right COLOR

Just about everyone has a favorite color, but they still want to know what’s “in” for this year. When deciding on color, remember that it’s the interaction of two or more colors that make for a pleasing decorating scheme. For most rooms, it’s a good idea to pick two colors, but no more than four.
Consider the amount of natural light in the room, the overall effect you hope to achieve and the furnishings in the room. Spend a week just looking around you at the different color combinations in buildings, on signs, in magazines and throughout stores.
Each year, the Color Marketing Group, a not-for-profit international association of 1,500 color designers involved in the use of color as it applies to the profitable marketing of goods and services, identifies the direction of color and design trends. For 2004, CMG predicted that color would become clear, therapeutic and nurturing. For the home, popular colors this year include:

Hockney Blue — Escape to the tropics with this soothing and tranquil blue-green

Soho Green — A fusion of bronze and gold creates this 21st century neutral, elemental and enduring

Coppertunity — An opportunity for copper fresh from the mine to move into the home. It is optimistic and happy, flattering to skin tones.

New Blue — Who knew this blue would be new? Familiar and calm, the tranquil effect of aquatic blue on environmental greens.

Good Earth — Freshly tilled, an enriched new brown with Victorian roots, Mission influences and Lodge appeal.

In April, 2003, CMG met in Hollywood, Florida to look at where color is going in 2005. They found that consumers desire comfort, stability and security, but optimistically yearn for bright and fresh signs of a better world to come. While special effects diminish, colors appear to be infused with light from within. Industry experts agreed that future colors “convey a respectful, serious nature, yet touch the soul.” In 2005, CMG predicts that home colors will continue to soften and become more serene. Top colors include:

Sea Coral — A sensually tactile hue that comes from fashion and cosmetics, yellow infuses pink with a healthy glow.

Latin Rose — Baked by the equatorial sun, red is softened and neutralized. Latin Rose embraces us all.

Twilight Shadow — Serene and safe, this red-infused blue is airy and atmospheric and inspires spiritual reflection.

Eden — A new beginning, Eden creates optimism and rejuvenation. This organic green is a symbol of the desire for rebirth and discovery.

Sheer — Like sunlight streaming through sheer fabric, this white infused with yellow is clean and bright.

If you want to get an early start at home, get a color wheel and consider different color combinations. While the pure colors you see on the typical color wheel — brilliant orange, pure violet and bright red — aren’t the ones you’re likely to use in your home, the color wheel does show harmonious color relationships and offers helpful color cues.
For rooms that you want to come off strong and bold, primary colors such as red, blue and yellow are a good choice. Use them in pairs, or combine all three. Secondary colors such as green, orange and purple are created by mixing two primary colors in equal amounts. Secondary hues can be tinted with white or shaded with black for variations. If you can’t envision a bold orange and green room, consider pairing up their paler tints of peach and sage. The primary and secondary colors illustrate that you can make a compatible triadic scheme by choosing any three colors equidistant on the wheel.
Tertiary colors are an equal mix of a primary and it’s closest secondary color: blue-green, yellow-green, red-orange, red-purple and blue-purple. Combine these colors for a sophisticated look. Or choose a monochromatic (single-shot) color. It won’t be bland because of subtle variations of the single color’s intensity. For instance, orange, coral and peach offer variety within the same family.
Choosing color combinations can be one of the most intimidating steps for beginning decorators. If you don’t trust your work on the color wheel, find an interior design you like and copy it, or tap into the expertise of a professional interior designer, painter or remodeler. No matter what color scheme you select, SBS carries a wide array of Glidden paints that promise a beautiful result.
